Achieve Equitable Identification: Universal Assessment and Local Norms

In the U.S., an estimated 1.5 million students of color in K-12 likely qualify for but have not been recognized as gifted. Drs. Naglieri, Brulles, and Lansdowne will describe ways to achieve equitable identification, including universal screening with general ability tests encompassing verbal, nonverbal, and quantitative content. These tests are designed to be solved regardless of the language a student knows, using local and national norms, maximizing the identification of students with the potential for high academic achievement. Emphasis will be placed on identifying educational services that fit the student’s needs.

Dr. Dina Brulles, Dr. Kimberly Lansdowne, Dr. Jack A. Naglieri
Presenter Bio(s)
Dr. Naglieri is an Emeritus Professor at George Mason University. He has published 23 books, 51 tests/rating scales, and 300 research papers. He is known for his emphasis on innovative tests, including the Naglieri General Ability Tests: Verbal, Nonverbal, and Quantitative, Cognitive Assessment System-2nd Ed., the ASRS, and CEFI. He emphasizes equitable assessment and uniting sound theory with practice.
Dr. Brulles is the Gifted Program Coordinator at the Mary Lou Fulton Teacher’s College at AZ State University. Her work emphasizes equitable identification and programming in gifted education. She is the author of Understanding and Using the Naglieri General Ability Tests: A Call for Equity in Gifted Education and the Naglieri Ability Test – Verbal.
Dr. Lansdowne, the founding Executive Director of the Herberger Young Scholars Academy at Arizona State University, received the 2023 Arizona Association for Gifted & Talented Lifetime Achievement Award. She is an active leader in gifted education advocacy, locally and internationally, and has published extensively, including co-authoring the Naglieri Tests of General Ability – Quantitative.
